Dozens of native birds and flying foxes have died from acute lead poisoning in Port Pirie.
Locals began noticing large numbers of dead animals in parks and green spaces earlier this year, prompting investigations, with testing confirming lead poisoning as the cause.
The EPA is still not clear on the source.

Between July and September, there were 14 reports of sick or dead birds around town.
Lead contamination has long been a problem, in 2021, blood lead levels in Port Pirie children reached the highest concentration in a decade.
The town remains under strict environmental controls to limit exposure.
