A significant World War II artefact has been donated to the Whyalla Maritime Museum.

The family of Neven Robinson Read of the Royal Australian Navy donated his ceremonial sword earlier this week.

Commander Read was the commander of the HMAS Whyalla during 1944-45 and served in the Royal Australian Navy for 35 years.

The sword is the museum’s first artefact linked to the ship’s WWII commanders.

Plans are now underway to develop a dedicated display to honour Commander Read’s 35 years of naval service along with an exhibition case to permanently display the ceremonial sword.
