We’re helping out friends in the Riverlands.
The National Sterile Insect Technology (SIT) facility in Port Augusta recently completed its $3 million expansion, doubling its production capacity to 40 million sterile Queensland fruit flies per week.
The increased production capacity is aiding the response to fruit fly outbreaks in the Riverland region, with all 40 million sterile flies being sent there to fight the current outbreak.
This expansion was funded by the Federal Government’s $30 million Building Resilience to Manage Fruit Fly package, with additional contributions from PIRSA and Citrus SA.
The SIT program reduces the fruit fly population by mating sterile flies with wild ones, preventing fertile offspring.
